When You’re Weary (Part 2)
Rejecting the easy, breezy, lazy lie
===
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.
Matthew 11:28-30 (NET)
===
I wanted to talk a little on yokes and loads.
First, a yoke.
It’s a wooden bar that you use to tie two animals together, such as oxen, in order to have them work side-by-side.
Yes, it limits the free reign of one ox, but also allows them to do much more together than they could ever do alone.
The metaphor isn’t too hard to see.
Jesus does have rules & requirements for us. We no longer have free reign to do whatever we want (did we ever really have that? No).
But is this yoke actually limiting our potential?
Of course not. God can do so much more through us than we could ever even imagine doing on our own. To be yoked to Christ is a blessing. It’s freedom.
What about loads we carry for Jesus?
You would think that Jesus would tell us that when we link up with Him we enter some sort of utopia/nirvanna state. Like everything is going to be easy-breezy.
But He doesn’t give us those lies. He tells us that walking with Him — doing His will — requires work.
Yet not hard toil that yields thorns & thistles … this is work that yields an eternal harvest.
Thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold.
That’s the best return on investment I’ve ever seen. I’d like to get on board with that.
How?
Wake up every day, spend time with Him, and ask Him what to do. I’m confident He’s happy to show us the answer.
