When You’re Weary (Part 1)
For when your soul is weighed down with weariness
===
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.
Matthew 11:28-30 (NET)
===
Comforting words from Jesus.
I tend to pile the weight on my own shoulders.
Thinking that I can handle much more than I actually can. Or thinking I should be able to handle much more than I actually can.
Maybe I should be able to, but often I’m not.
Regardless, I often need these words from the Savior.
Jesus promises rest for the weary.
Of course, this is much deeper than physical weariness — though being emotionally or spiritually weary can be taxing to our bodies. Remember David talked in Psalm 32 about his bones wasting away while keeping silent about sin.
The heaviness of sin takes a toll — even if you’re not the one in the wrong.
There have been a few times in my life when merely witnessing sin(s) weighed my soul down, left me emotionally and physically exhausted, even though I didn’t commit those acts of sin.
Life is hard, and there’s a certain weariness to dealing with the hard reality of life in this broken world.
The older I get, the more true that reality becomes.
Yet, as children of the eternal King, we face a reality that the world can’t understand: someday soon all our weariness will be washed away. The burden of life will be over and we’ll be made new in the presence of the perfect Father.
Since the founding of the Church, Christians have longed for that Day.
Soon and very soon we are going to see our King.
In the meantime, call out to Christ for healing for your weary soul.
