Trusting God (Part 2)
Old Faithful and the Rock of Ages
===
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.
Isaiah 26:3-4 (ESV)

Like nature’s clockwork.
Every forty-four minutes to two hours, Old Faithful — the geyser in Yellowstone National Park — erupts.
Okay, it’s not Swiss precision clockwork. But Old Faithful was so consistent that it was so named all the way back in 1871 (yes, I looked it up. I don’t walk around with Old Faithful trivia inside my head. 😆)
I was thinking about it as an illustration for verse 4 today: “the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”
God is the ultimate “Old Faithful.”
Now, usually when I think about rocks, it’s just a little stone that I can pick up and toss around.
Not this rock.
This kind of rock is closer to the stone of foundation that someone might build a sturdy house upon. They would dig down, find the stable stone, and build from there.
Jesus talked a little about this in his houses built on rock and sand parable.
In that parable, He had a lot to say about the importance of obeying vs. merely hearing. And when it comes to demonstrating trust — in anyone — obedience is the key. Merely listening but never taking action shows a lack of trust.
If I say I trust God, I better obey Him.
Looking back at yesterday’s verse, I can see how trust begins with time invested.
So, if I’m spending time with God, not only am I keeping my mind stayed on Him (on the path to perfect peace), but I’m also demonstrating faith in Him.
I’m glad God is the original Old Faithful.
