The Word Became Flesh

Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory—the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.
John 1:14 (NET)

Not a traditional advent verse, yet it perfectly fits.
Because this is the season to remember that Jesus came to live among us. God came down and took on flesh & blood for our sake.
This was actually a pretty controversial verse for unbelievers when John wrote it.
The culture had no problem with gods walking among them, as long as they remained spiritual.
The idea of God taking on human flesh, not just existing as a spirit-being, was quite controversial.
We’ve kind of flipped that idea in our culture today.
Now people accept Jesus as a just a man but have a problem with Him being God.
I find that interesting.
I also like how John hints at the ending of his Gospel, by telling us how he is an eyewitness of God’s glory taking on flesh.
Of course all the disciples (except Judas) were present for Christ’s ascension after His resurrection.
That would certainly have been a glorious thing to behold.
But John was also there for the Transfiguration, where the veil of heaven was lifted, briefly, and he saw Jesus as the glorious Son of God.
I can only imagine how incredible that was.
Anyway, what we have now is an annual reminder of this glorious moment in time: that God came and lived among us, walking in glorious perfection, and giving His life as a sacrifice in our place so that we might have the chance to walk in restored relationships with Him … forever.
