The Great High Priest
One Sacrifice for All Time
===
For it is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has no need to do every day what those priests do, to offer sacrifices first for their own sins and then for the sins of the people, since he did this in offering himself once for all.
Hebrews 7:26-27 (NET)
===
Sometimes I need a reminder of the significant work that Jesus did for me.
And for you too.
God had set up a temporary sacrifice system to point us to the true sacrifice.
Other verses talk about how inadequate those animal offerings were.
Acceptable only because of a heart that desired to please God (thus, God decided to honor that, much like how He honored Abel’s sacrifice but not Cain’s). But also acceptable because the offering Jesus would make of Himself.
One sacrifice for all time.
No matter how hard I try, it’s still a struggle to wrap my mind around Jesus’ perfection.
I see how easily I falter and I’m astonished that He didn’t.
Not only that, but instead of lording Himself over humanity -- which He could rightfully do, and will do eventually (every knee will bow) -- He chose to humble Himself. Taking on flesh. Living the perfect life I cannot, dying the death I deserve, so I might have life eternal.
The description of Jesus in this verse is apt:
Holy. Innocent. Undefiled. Separate from sinners. Exalted above the heavens.
A perfect God, loving us radically, and sharing new life.
What should I do with this today?
At the very least, I can say “thank you” to the Great High Priest.
I can also do my best to honor Him today.
