The crown of life awaits those who…
Endure Trials
===
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
James 1:12 (ESV)
===
What kind of trial are we talking about here?
At first glance you might think it’s about the moment-to-moment trials that come up throughout life.
But there’s a bigger thing going on.
This trial is all about life itself, and enduring the struggle of walking with God while here on the Earth.
I can see that because that’s the reward we would expect to see from a believer who endures the trials of life and goes to eternity with God and then hears Him declare, “Well done you good and faithful servant.”
i.e., the crown of life.
James also makes it obvious in this verse who the kind of people are that will receive this glorious crown:
Those who love God.
As you might expect, the Greek for that kind of love here is rooted in “agape.”
This is the highest tier of love in the Greek language, reserved for the sacrificial, selfless love. The love that Christ displayed for us by coming to Earth, living a perfect, sinless life, and dying a cruel & unjust death in our place so that we might have eternal life with Him.
Sacrificial. Selfless.
Agape.
We love God because He first loved us.
That’s why we can endure the trials of life, Christ showed us the way.
More than that, He also sent His own Spirit as our Comforter & Guide. Thus, continuing to show us the way.
Endure the trial my friend.
Heaven will be worth it.
I’m supremely confident in that.
