The Beatitudes (Part 6)
Can you really see God?
===
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Matthew 5:8 (NET)
===
Most days I get to read a verse and share some thoughts with you.
This one was tough, I didn’t quite know what to do with this verse.
So I looked at a couple of the key Greek words: pure & see
The word “pure” here is more normally translated as “clean.”
I get why they chose pure, it makes sense when paired with heart.
But I also like the imagery of clean here. I immediately think about the righteousness we receive from Christ, that we’re made clean because of His blood sacrifice that covers our sin.
Of course, when Jesus preached this, that day was still in the future.
But the blessing still applies for the people who are clean in heart.
The other question I had was, “what does it mean to see God?”
Again, the word see here isn’t quite what the Greek conveys. It’s more like staring or experiencing.
So, putting this together, I can make a case for: those clean in heart will experience God.
(Henry Blackaby might have a thing or two to say about Experiencing God.)
Now this could feel oversimplified: of course those who are made righteous by God get to experience God. But on a deeper level, we also have this blessing we could apply to our daily walk with God.
That’s quite the blessing, and I get to experience it every day when I spend time in God’s Word.
