The Beatitudes (Part 4)
A good day to get spiritually hungry
===
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Matthew 5:6 (NET)
===
This reminds me of the poor in spirit beatitude.
It’s taking a physical reality that people can understand and then painting a similar picture of the spiritual world.
In this case, hunger and thirst of a spiritual nature.
In the physical world, sadly, hunger and thirst don’t always go satisfied.
But Jesus is making a blessing here where those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied.
Not just any sort of spiritual food will do.
We must be longing for the food of God, the bread of Life.
A whole lot of people are spiritually sensitive, but they aren’t actually longing for righteousness. Maybe they just want to stop fearing death, or they could want status, or they may just go with the major spiritual swings of society.
However it happens, spiritual doesn’t always point to righteousness.
Paul tells us in Romans that the law of God is written on our hearts.
He’s referring to the moral conscience we all have.
Showing us that no one has an excuse on the Day of Judgment, we are all accountable for the life we lived and the unrighteous choices we make.
Now, here’s a question:
How much do I hunger and thirst for the Word of God?
I have access to it pretty much whenever, wherever. But do I take the spiritual food for granted or do I truly long to feast in the presence of God?
Today is a good day to get hungry and thirsty.
