The Armor of God (Part 3)

by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace,
Ephesians 6:15 (NET)
===
The Roman messenger god, Mercury, was known for his winged feet.
It’s where we get today’s winged shoes iconography.
I bet the winged wheel symbol of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team is rooted in this imagery too.
I bring all that up because we’ve tied shoes to the messenger from thousands of years.
(Yes, pun intended.)
Of course a messenger’s job is to bring an important message. That’s implied in the name.
What message could the one wearing the armor of God be bringing?
The good news -- Gospel -- of peace.
I also think you can link this image to the Great Commission:
Jesus told us to “go into all the world and make disciples of all nations.” Spreading the message of the Gospel requires movement.
And movement in the ancient times required walking.
Well, I guess it still requires walking today.
Which, now that I think about it, kind of contradicts my earlier emails on the importance of standing our ground against the Enemy.
I suppose you should give greater weight to the more obvious context of the passage (meaning, stick with stand rather than walking as the more direct meaning).
But we cannot stand around waiting for attacks forever.
At some point we go on the offensive, seeking out the lost and sharing the good news with them.
An attack against the Enemy.
Charging the gates of hell and rescuing some who were chained.
If I’m going to attack those fires, I better have some great shoes!
