Seasoned with Salt
Feelin’ a little salty

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer everyone.
Colossians 4:6 (NET)

I like this verse.
Aside from being in the Bible, thus making it a good verse because it’s inspired by God, it’s about seasoning our speech with salt.
As a writer, I’m a fan.
So, what does it look like to season our speech with salt?
I’m not interested in digging too far into the metaphor here. I don’t need to pull out a ton of theological lessons based around a word-picture.
What I am interested in is making the obvious connection that I think Paul is making.
Just like salted food tastes better — as long as it’s not over-salted — properly salted speech impacts better.
Proper answers, like proper seasoning, require a light touch and practice.
I remember back in college we were doing a little “homemade” dinner and asking a friend to add garlic salt to the garlic bread.
Well, he had never cooked before (I didn’t know that) and he just dumped a heap of garlic salt on one quarter of the bread.
I was horrified!
We tried spreading it out as best we could, but, alas, what was done was done. Almost inedible (though we were broke college boys, so not quite inedible).
Anyway, I tell this story to emphasize the point:
A light touch and practice.
May your speech be so graciously seasoned.
