Salt of the Earth
🧂 pour a little salt on that
===
Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other.
Mark 9:50 (NET)
===
After the Disciples had an argument over who was the greatest, Jesus had some lessons to teach them.
This is part of that lesson.
What is salt good for?
First, it’s good at preserving food.
Think salted meats, which was one way to keep them from decaying in the ages before refrigeration.
In a similar way, we as believers are to be preservatives against the decay of sin in the world. It’s obvious that sinful culture is always spiraling the world toward chaos & darkness.
The Gospel helps keep that decay at bay.
But salt is also good for enhancing flavor.
You’ve probably experienced a time when you were eating something and it tasted a bit bland.
So you poured some salt on it.
Suddenly the flavors popped and the whole meal became better.
Our work as servants of the Kingdom of Heaven here on the earth should also help to enhance life. The world around us should be enhanced by the salt we bring.
Lastly, be at peace with each other.
In John 17, Jesus prays for unity for the whole church.
I know we can have a lot of disagreements with different doctrines & interpretations of Scripture. But if we’re agreeing on the big stuff (i.e., Jesus is the only way to salvation, He’s the only Son of God, etc.) then we ought to be at peace.
The mission of saving the world is too big for us to bicker.
