Our Strong Refuge
A helping fortress for the times of trouble
===
God is our strong refuge; he is truly our helper in times of trouble.
Psalm 46:1 (NET)
===
I like this description of God.
It feels like one of the more masculine traits He has, where He acts as our fortress of safety in times of struggle.
More than a fortress, God is also a helper for us.
He doesn’t just sit back passively, allowing the world to happen around us. He’s always stepping in and making changes.
We have all kinds of miracles throughout the Bible where God steps in and does some incredible things. Parting the Red Sea. Destroying the walls of Jericho. Defeating the prophets of Baal at Mt. Carmel. Saving Jonah with a whale.
And those are just some Old Testament miracles.
God incarnate, Jesus Himself, came down to earth to change everything.
This was the ultimate in Him stepping into the world.
God became a man to deal a final blow to sin. Someday He’ll come back and deal a final blow to death and make all things new.
In the meantime, we have this powerful God who wants to be our fortress and helper.
Perhaps the best thing to do is to cry out to Him in the times of trouble. Let Him step in and be the hero we need.
After all, He’s been doing it for a long, long time.
