Live the Gospel (Part 1)
One word to define the Christian walk
===
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ so that — whether I come and see you or whether I remain absent — I should hear that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, by contending side by side for the faith of the gospel
Philippians 1:27 (NET)
===
I find it interesting that Paul both encourages & challenges them here.
I suppose it’s more of a spurring them on. Like a good coach giving a game-time speech.
Paul often paid particular attention to the unity we should have as believers. Talking about us being the singular Body of Christ, standing firm in one spirit, having one mind, striving side by side… there’s a lot of reinforcement of the unity of the Church.
But I want to focus on how he starts this verse:
Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.
If I had to boil this into a single word, I might choose “integrity,” a steadfast adherence to a moral code.
This integrity of the Philippians was not to remain hidden, but to be a light to the world so that news of their conduct would spread. Paul wanted to remind them that the words & actions they took would spread and he wanted to always be hearing a good report.
Of course, this doesn’t have to be limited to the Philippians.
We can do the same today.
How do we conduct ourselves in this manner?
…
I started to answer this but broke through my word limit, so I’ll have to continue these thoughts tomorrow.
