Ignoring this is a mistake
Careful to Do What Is Right
===
For we are concerned about what is right not only before the Lord but also before men.
2 Corinthians 8:21 (NET)
===
I wonder how many of us Christians dogmatically stick to the first half of this verse and yet ignore the second?
What I mean is, am I concerned about what is right before men?
We’re often taught to ignore men’s thoughts and only pursue God.
I agree that there is an appropriate hierarchy to follow. If God’s ways directly contradict a way of man, then obviously I should follow God’s direction.
That’s simple enough.
But what about the more gray areas?
What about the times when there are cultural things that make me a bit uncomfortable, or that I have to work a bit harder at, that don’t fight God’s ways?
How can I be better concerned about what is right before men?
For example, something I’ve always struggled with is my size. I’m overweight.
Sure, there are things to be said about taking care of God’s temple (my own flesh) and how I should honor God with my body. I understand.
But there’s also a motivation from the reality that people just respect healthy, in-shape people more.
You can’t fake your way to a disciplined weight.
It takes hard, consistent work.
Now, I haven’t thought too deeply about whether this falls under the category of “what is right before men” but it’s an example to get the thoughts flowing.
For today, I want to get us pondering ways we can be concerned about both God & people.
