I Know the Plans I Have for You
☕ a coffee cup verse

For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord. ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you a future filled with hope.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NET)

This is one of those “coffee cup” verses.
What I mean is, people often print these out on their coffee mugs to give them a little extra emotional kick along with their caffeine.
Nothing wrong with that.
But sometimes these things can be taken way out of context.
For example, this was in the middle of Jeremiah’s prophecy to Judah.
God had just told them that they were going to be carried off in exile to Babylon. They would spend about 70 years there before He would start bringing them back to their Promised Land.
So, they would have to endure that hardship and then the plans of “a future filled with hope” would come.
Not exactly a message of exceeding joy.
For me, this grounds the message in gritty reality.
It helps me think of this great verse in terms of the ultimate future filled with hope:
Eternity in perfect relationship with God Almighty.
Yes, that’s on the other side of death.
And until then there will be hardships to endure, probably for a long time.
But we are not like others without hope, we endure because we are renewed in our relationship through the blood of Christ.
That brings hope.
