God Never Changes (Part 1)
Who is like God?
===
God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
Numbers 23:19 (ESV)
===
God is not like us.
A strange thought because we are made in His image. It’d be easy to think that God might be just like us.
The ancient Greeks portrayed their gods as close to humans, with all their petty squabbles, drama, debauchery, etc. Who would ever want to worship a god that’s just as flawed as you and me?
I’m glad God is not like you & me.
I struggle with sin. I lie from time to time — more often lying to myself than anyone else. I’m also fickle and change my mind about things.
Of course, changing your mind isn’t necessarily a sin. Sometimes you discover new information that means the old decision you had made needs to be dropped for a better decision now.
Circumstances change.
But God is all-knowing. He doesn’t learn new information that will lead to a better decision. He always knows all things and thus has no need to change His mind.
More:
This immutability of God — his unchanging nature — leads to stability for us.
How could I rely on the gods of Greece who are always changing? Yet I can rely on the God of heaven because He isn’t like me:
He’s unwavering.
Remembering this about God is what gives me comfort when the storms of life are thundering.
All right, more on this verse tomorrow.
