Fuel the Holy Spirit (Part 1)

Because of this I remind you to rekindle God’s gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NET)

I’ve taken the imagery of this verse to heart.
Kindling are the small twigs, wood shavings, really anything that you would use to light a fire. They need to be tiny and dry to take a spark. But the spark is just the beginning. A careful mix of air (usually by blowing on the tiny embers) with the kindling is necessary to turn that ember into a coal. Then more coaxing can build it into a larger and larger fire.
In today’s lighter fueled modern tech, we tend to forget the work it takes to prepare for creating a roaring fire.
Now, does God need us to do all this work in order to light a fire in our hearts?
Nope.
But He wants to work with us to light this fire.
This is how you know that we’re in a loving relationship with a good Father, not merely underlings doomed to follow the orders of the master.
As we mature in our walk with God, we move away from the childish nature of the relationship (go here, do this, don’t do that, etc.) and into a conversation with a trusted advisor.
This has been a surprising development in my spiritual walk.
At first I thought that God was just being quiet, biding His time.
But now, I’m thinking that He’s inviting me to listen closer to His still, small voice. To lean in deeper, to trust Him more, and relate to Him on a whole new level.
It’s both exciting and intimidating.
… I’ll cover some more tomorrow.
