Eternally rewarding work
The Armor of God (Part 5)
===
And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God).
Ephesians 6:17 (NET)
===
The head and the hands.
The last equipment in the armor of God.
Probably also the last equipment that a normal soldier puts on.
Salvation protects our minds from the Enemy’s attacks.
I think about some of Paul’s other writings, especially the one to the Roman church.
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind,” (Romans 12). It is, of course, the transforming work of Christ (and the Holy Spirit) that brings salvation to us.
And, apparently, protects us in the battle.
Be careful what you fill your mind with.
I’ve heard it said that you’re the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.
If that’s true -- and it seems to be -- then I better spend as much time with Jesus as I can. I want to be more and more like Him … and less like me.
We’re not powerless in our spiritual battles -- we have a sword.
The sword is the offensive weapon of the soldier. Roman swords were designed to deal a killing blow to the enemy quickly and efficiently.
No wasted energy with an overhead swing -- it was a forward thrust.
When the Enemy suddenly attacks and you need to deal an efficient blow against him, a quick verse recalled from memory is the best choice.
Which requires you to actually spend time memorizing verses.
It’s work, but it’s eternally worth it.
After all, the Word remains forever. (A fantastic return on investment!)
