Dumber than a bird
Self-Defeating Strategies
===
Surely it is futile to spread a net in plain sight of any bird, but these men lie in wait for their own blood, they ambush their own lives!
Proverbs 1:17-18 (NET)
===
A few weeks ago I heard a message preached on Proverbs chapter 1.
It clarified this verse for me in a way that I hadn’t seen before.
Even birds know when to avoid a net.
It’s a great, big insult to these evil-doers who would lead the young astray with their schemes.
A stupid little bird knows enough to avoid nets set up while they’re watching. Yet these guys are too foolish to avoid the traps that their own strategies lay out for them.
They get too greedy for the potential gain and miss the obvious danger.
Dumber than a bird … what an insult!
I think this advice fits under the warning of “self-defeating strategies.” Well, not these particular verses, but the ones spread throughout the book of Proverbs dealing with the schemes of evil-doers.
They think they’re clever & wise, but reality will smack them in the face.
Hard.
The sage of Proverbs warns the young reader to beware their ways and avoid the pitfalls of these fools.
Good advice for us to take today, too.
While evil usually starts looking harmless, if you spend a little time thinking through the ultimate end, you can quickly see how its inevitable conclusion is pain & suffering.
These fools think only of what they might gain.
Wiser people think beyond that, taking note of the likely consequences.
In a sense, it’s all about risk management.
And when it comes to eternity, we’d better manage our risk very, very well.
