Doubting yet obeying
But at Your Word
===
When [Jesus] had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing! But at your word I will lower the nets.”
Luke 5:4-5 (NET)
===
I wrote yesterday about Moses’s hesitation to trust & obey God.
Here we have a story of Peter, one of Jesus’s disciples, trusting & obeying Him pretty much immediately.
He still shares his doubts, but instead of hesitating, he goes ahead and obeys.
God seeks obedient servants for His Kingdom.
I confessed to you yesterday that I was someone who is often guilty of hesitating to obey God whenever I’m called by Him.
And that I desire to be a man who’s better at quickly obeying.
Here we have the example of Peter quickly obeying.
Plus, I love that he shares his doubts yet still follows through on what Jesus asks of him.
God is gracious and allows us to share our doubts.
There are a ton of Psalms where the writer shares doubts with God. Looking at the difficult circumstances around him and wondering aloud, “where is God in all of this?”
I’m so, so thankful that God is not petty.
He welcomes my doubts and fears as long as I go ahead and trust Him.
I often find myself praying, “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.”
The good news is that I don’t have to obey in my own power alone.
Faithfulness is a fruit of the Spirit. He helps me be a man who is faithful to my calling. In fact, He builds that faith up within me.
As I mature in my walk with Jesus the goal is to become more and more immediately obedient.
I still have a long way to go.
