Rejoice in God’s Deliverance
===
Hannah prayed, “My heart has rejoiced in the Lord; my horn has been raised high because of the Lord. I have loudly denounced my enemies. Indeed I rejoice in your deliverance.”
1 Samuel 2:1 (NET)
===
This is the beginning of Hannah’s prayer song to God after the Lord gave her a son.
Something I learned from my late Old Testament seminary professor was the importance of genre change in ancient texts.
For example, Samuel is a book that’s mostly historical narrative. Yet here we have a song right near the beginning.
That’s a clue that this song contains insight into the main lesson the author has to teach us.
And it makes sense for the book of Samuel (the original Hebrew Bible has 1 & 2 Samuel as one, single book). So much of it shows God’s people in trouble and the Lord coming through and delivering them.
The easy one to think of is David & Goliath.
No one had a hope of defeating that giant. King Saul — the tallest man in Israel — wouldn’t go out to fight him.
So, God raised up a deliverer from the most unlikely place:
A runt, the last of a long line of brothers, not even old enough to fight, and yet he defeated that giant.
We see other stories of that same David oppressed by all kinds of enemies, yet God continued to deliver him.
From Philistines. From his jealous king. From a rebellious son. From his own foolish sins.
Time and time and time again God delivers His children.
So, what should we do when God delivers us from our troubles?

Rejoice!
