A brutal, uncomfortable reality
Grace & Justice
===
The Lord passed by before him and proclaimed: “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness, keeping loyal love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. But he by no means leaves the guilty unpunished, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children and children’s children, to the third and fourth generation.”
Exodus 34:6-7 (NET)
===
For some reason these two aspects of God really challenge people’s thinking.
Some want God to be all grace: allowing everyone to live forever with no punishment for sin.
Others want some justice done -- not for their sin, but for the big-bad ones who really deserve it.
As if our limited human experience could possibly understand the reality of sin in light of a holy and perfect God.
Nope.
The reality we live with is this unfair God:
Who made a path for us fallen humans by sacrificing His own Son’s life.
Justice served on the cross when the infinite God of the universe became the very punishment for sin in our place.
But if we choose not to accept that sacrifice, well justice must be served somehow.
It cannot be swept under the rug.
That’s where the tough reality of hell comes in.
But these verses deal with more than eternity, they also deal with the consequences of sin.
No matter what lie you’ve been told, sin never -- NEVER -- affects just one person.
It always spills over onto others.
It’s gross.
It’s messy.
It affects our relationship with others in subtle ways that sometimes we can only see by looking back in time with the wisdom of experience.
That’s part of the sad reality of how transgression visits generations.
But it doesn’t have to stop there.
Jesus brings hope & transformation.
A new story can be told, rising from the ashes of the old.
